Hungary: Court extends arrest of river cruise ship captain

BUDAPEST, Hungary — A Hungarian court has extended until Sept. 30 the pre-trial arrest of the captain of a river cruise ship involved in a deadly May crash with a much smaller tour boat on the Danube River in Budapest.

Twenty-six South Korean tourists and two Hungarian crew members aboard the Hableany (Mermaid) died when their sightseeing boat crashed with the cruise ship and sank May 29. Only seven tourists survived and the remains of a South Korean woman are still missing.

Friday’s court decision came in response to a request by prosecutors.

The 64-year-old Ukrainian captain of the Viking Sigyn cruise ship is suspected of responsibility in the collision. He was released on bail June 13, but later re-arrested because of the risk that he could flee or impede the investigation.
