Hundreds rally in Calgary to support Kashmir

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — From Calgary to Kashmir, a group of protesters met at city hall Sunday night to draw attention to the Indian state.

Earlier this month, the Indian Government imposed a military crackdown on the state and stripped it of its autonomy.

The military occupation resulted in a media blackout, meaning little information is getting out.

One of the organizers for the rally Riyaz Khawaja said people need to know what’s happening.

“All we want to do is show that we are standing with the people of Kashmir from this part of the world, a peaceful country. At the same time, we just want to make everyone aware of the situation.”

Khawaja, who has family in Kashmir, said he can’t get a hold of them because of the lockdown.

“There’s no communication. A country is claiming they are democratic and at the same time they are putting seven million people under siege without communication.”

A similar rally was held Saturday night at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square where protestors demanded the federal government take action.

Despite the Indian Government saying it would ease the lockdown and restore phone service, many restrictions are still in place for the region.
