‘I heard rustling in the bushes’: Bear warning issued for Fish Creek Provincial Park

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Alberta Parks has issued a bear warning for Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Multiple bears were seen feeding near Votiers Flats and Shannon Terrace day use areas.

One resident in Riverbend recalled his close encounter on Friday night.

“Five minutes into walking on the pathway I just heard some rustling in the bushes so I stopped,” he said. “I thought it was maybe a beaver or like a skunk or something at first, but then it was way too big, definitely bigger than a wolf or anything like that. So I jumped back really far and I guess a bear walked in front of me.”

To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear, Alberta Parks recommends traveling in a group and making lots of noise.

“It just stayed in the bushes, I could hear it moving around,” he added. “I waited for 10 minutes and then I felt comfortable enough, so I walked through.”

Carrying bear spray that is easily accessible is also advised.
