Man arrested, woman hit by car after shoplifting incident in SW Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A series of events in the southwest end of the city led to one man being charged with shoplifting and woman getting hit by a car.
It all started around 6:30 p.m. in front of a liquor store near the corner of 8 St. and 12 Ave. 660’s Tom Ross was on his way home when he heard a loud bang.
“First off I’m biking home and I hear someone get hit by a car,” he said.
“So I turned around and I saw the [loss and prevention] officers tackle a guy to the sidewalk. They try to get his hands behind his back so they can handcuff him. They kept saying he stole something from — I’m assuming the liquour store because that’s where they came out of.”

The man’s partner was hit by a car after she exited the liquor store. Then loss and prevention officers went outside to arrest the man.
“The woman who was hit by the car was sitting on the sidewalk yelling at them [officers], trying to get them to get off of him,” he described.
“She kept saying that he ‘gave it back’, so I don’t know if that indicates that whatever he stole he gave back, but they were still trying to tackle him down and restrain him.”

EMS subsequently took the woman to Sheldon Chumir for treatment of minor injuries.
Calgary police say the man was arrested at the scene and later charged with shoplifting.
