A reminder to plan ahead this long weekend

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The August long weekend is always a busy time of year and 2019 is expected to be no different.

Thousands of Calgarians will be either making a trip to the mountain parks or having a stay-cation in the city.

If you want to head to Banff but don’t want to drive, Parks Manager of Visitor Experience Greg Danchuk said there’s an alternative way to travel.

“On-It runs buses from Calgary that makes it really convenient to get right to downtown Banff.”

He adds there are buses to take you throughout Banff and if you do plan on driving Danchuk encourages you to plan ahead and make sure you have all the proper permits.

Danchuk also said the no-alcohol rule is still in place in Banff National Park and its campgrounds.

“This is to provide for more of a family-friendly atmosphere. This has been the situation for many years here and our visitors love this.”

If you plan to stay in Calgary, expect to see an increased police presence as checkstops will be set up to catch any impaired drivers.

“The citizens of Calgary or anywhere in Alberta should expect that if you’re stopped by the police that you may be asked to provide a breath sample,” said Cst. Andrew Fairman.

Cst. Fairman encourages you to find an alternate way home if you plan on drinking alcohol or using cannabis.

He also has a simple message for those who don’t follow the law.

“We will be out around the city and if you are pulled over and arrested in a checkstop, you’re going to end up with a charge and some sort of provincial sanction.”
