Woman and dog rescued from island on Bow River

A woman and her dog had to be retrieved by the Calgary Fire Department’s aquatic team from a small island on the Bow River in south Calgary on Thursday afternoon.

She had decided to swim out to the island, however once there Battalion Chief Alistair Robin says she decided she wasn’t comfortable swimming back to shore.

“She made a call into 911 and crews arrived assessed the situation and realized it was probably best to get the boat involved,” said Robin. “So the aquatics team launched and picked her up on the island and brought her and her dog safely back to shore.”

Robin says there is a lesson from this that everyone should heed.

“Even if you are a strong swimmer you should swim in pairs, swim with a PFD and swimming with an animal is not advised as well, in case your animal becomes in dangered and you make decisions to save your animal and put yourself at risk.”
