Mistrust, anger toward China growing among Canadians says poll

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A poll conducted by Research Co. in early July is suggesting that Canadians have a growing feeling of anger and mistrust towards the country and subsequently the Chinese tech-giant Huawei.

Research Co. asked a thousand Canadians if the federal government should ban the company from Canada’s 5G networks.

Mario Canseco said that the response was pretty strong.

“Sixty-eight per cent of Canadians believe that the federal government should not allow Huawei to be apart of the countries development of 5G communications,” Canseco said.

That is a sharp spike over the past five months, following the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver and the subsequent retaliation by the Chinese Government.

Canseco said that the results underscore a sense of anger directed towards China.

“That is one of the reasons for many Canadians to think this is the kind of relationship that should be re-evaluated and not just kept for the sake of keeping it.”

The poll also finds that seven in ten Canadians support the way that the government has dealt with the Meng Wanzhou situation.
