Father-son team prepare to take a Tech Time Out

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – If you’ve ever looked for a way to keep your kids off their phones or televisions, a father-son duo has an idea, journey to the other side of the world.

Adventurer Jamie Clarke has submitted some of the world’s tallest mountains but now is getting ready an adventure with his son Khobe.

The pair plan to stay off technology for an entire month, but it won’t be in Calgary.

“We need to do something extreme,” said Jamie. “We picked a place that’s remote and far away and doesn’t have a lot of technical infrastructures and that’s where we’re going to go and spend a month and that’s Mongolia.”

The cross-country adventure begins on July 28 and while Khobe admits it’ll be tough to put away the phone, he’s looking forward to the tech time out.

“I’m going to try and focus on the ride across country and the climb to get away from my need to connect with everybody back home.”

There are many reasons why Jamie and Mark are taking this time out, aside from getting away from technology.

Jamie said that he wants to spend quality time with his son and reconnect with the outdoors.

“Tech tends to drive us inward, for good reason. There’s good content on streaming services, there’s lots to watch, there’s work to be done. We can sit around inside looking at monitors a lot of the time and then we miss out on the benefits of going outside.”

The real question is, will they return to technology when they return to Canada. Khobe said he will but believes he’ll be more conscious of his time with it.

“I don’t think I’m going to put it down for good, I think I will definitely return to my old ways. But it will definitely make me feel less oblivious to using it all the time everywhere.”

The father-son team is hoping that their experience can inspire others.

“If that can inspire other parents to think ‘how can I spend some quality time with my kids’. You don’t have to go to Mongolia but let’s do some stuff without being distracted by technology.”
