Stampeders ready to hand reins to Arbuckle if Mitchell is out

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — As the Calgary Stampeders wait on a second opinion on quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell’s injury, the team has a Plan B.

Nick Arbuckle, who was behind the ball in Calgary’s thrilling come from behind victory over the B.C. Lions last weekend, will get the start Saturday in Regina if Mitchell can’t go.

“If Bo didn’t play, Nick’s our guy,” head coach Dave Dickenson said after Thursday’s practice. “Nick’s earned it. He’s had a good camp and looked great last week. Obviously, you play who is best and who is playing well, but you have to remember that there’s a pecking order.”

Arbuckle went 9-for-9 in passing for 93 yards in relief of Mitchell in the 36-32 Week 3 win.

“He knows what he’s doing,” Dickenson explained of Arbuckle. “He’s never had to deal with the crowd noise and being on the road. It’s not like he hasn’t played in big games in college, but it’s been awhile. I think Nick will handle that fine. It’s just the challenge of going up against big defence.”

The Stampeders are 1-1 to start in the 2019 campaign.
