Family of Calgary woman killed by police officer wants answers

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The family of a woman shot and killed by Calgary Police last week says they need answers.

Angela May-Fiddler says she was very close to her cousin, Robin Fiddler, who was originally from the Water-Hen First Nation in Saskatchewan but who had lived in Calgary for the last five years.

At about 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Calgary Police were called to the southeast community of Southview after getting reports of a suspicious person wandering in and out of backyards.

The Alberta Serious Response Incident Team (ASIRT) says an officer was then pepper sprayed while sitting in her cruiser and when she got out of the car to arrest Fiddler there was a struggle and Fiddler was shot.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died of her injuries.

May-Fiddler says the family would like to see unedited footage of the incident, as she highly doubts Fiddler would spray the officer without reason. She’s also calling for mandatory cultural awareness training.

Acting Deputy Police Chief Steve Barlow commended the officer for how she handled the incident, saying no one comes to work planning on being in this type of situation.

ASIRT continues to investigate and is asking for any video evidence or witnesses to come forward.
