Arts, convention centre projects weighed in Juneau

JUNEAU, Alaska — Backers of a new Juneau Arts and Culture Center are seeking $7.5 million from the city as part of ongoing fundraising efforts.

Bruce Botelho is co-chair of the New JACC Partnership, which is raising money for the centre. He says about $5.5 million has been raised of the project’s estimated $26.4 million cost.

He says the amount requested from the City and Borough of Juneau would demonstrate the project’s viability.

Capital City Weekly reports proposals for the centre and renovations to the downtown Centennial Hall were discussed during a recent Assembly committee meeting.

An architect gave what he called a conservative estimate for Centennial Hall renovations of around $18 million, which includes $3 million for nearby street improvements.

The committee did not discuss how any such renovation might be funded.
