‘Shot in the arm’ for Canadian energy sector as Calgary awarded World Petroleum Congress

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The World Petroleum Council voted to hold the World Petroleum Congress in Calgary in 2023. Canada won 51 per cent of the votes to earn the right to hold the annual international event, now in the 24th year.

In a tweet, Mayor Naheed Nenshi gave his staff credit for the win: “that’s due to the work of these incredible volunteers led by the amazing Denis Painchaud.”

Painchaud is chairman of the World Petroleum Council of Canada, the committee that mounted the bid.

“It was a thrilling victory with one vote after four rounds of voting but our votes stuck with us,” he said. “It’s been five years in the making to get here. We’re at a loss for words because it’s so incredibly exciting.”

The event will bring some of the most powerful movers and shakers in the energy industry to Calgary. The 65 member countries represent over 96 per cent of the world’s oil and gas consumption and production.

“What a shot in the arm for the Canadian energy sector — people were excited to learn about Canadian energy, they understood that Calgary remains a global epicentre for the world oil and gas industry,” Nenshi said.

“Here’s a chance to showcase our innovation, our environmental stewardship and our sustainability.”
