Judge rules out changes to hockey boundaries in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Hockey Calgary’s move to change boundaries in the city has been called offside.

A Court of Queen’s Bench judge ruled that the governing body can’t change its boundaries without cause.

Hockey Calgary made the decision to eliminate and merge a number of associations in March, but many parents didn’t agree and took them to court.

The parent group argued that such changes would make it more difficult for children to play in the city because the boundaries would expand forcing them to travel farther between rinks.

Following the decision Hockey Calgary issued a release saying, “As an organization we are greatly disappointed in this decision. The fact that 82 per cent of our membership supported the March 18 boundary decision at our recent AGM on June 18 gives the board confidence that we acted in the best interests of our members.”

They continue to say that based on the courts understanding of their bylaws, Hockey Calgary couldn’t eliminate an association without their agreement and that the terms of reference of the operations committee requires a “formal” recommendation on boundaries.

If associations have agreed to change their boundaries they can move forward as planned.
