2nd journalist slain in Brazilian city in less than a month

RIO DE JANEIRO — Police say a reporter has been slain in a coastal city east of Rio de Janeiro, the second journalist killed there in less than a month.

Rio’s Civil Police department said Wednesday that it is investigating who killed 31-year-old Romario da Silva Barros and for what motive.

Barros worked for the Lei Seca Marica website that covers general news in the city of Marica. He was found shot to death in his car on Tuesday.

The owner of a local newspaper in the city was killed on May 25 and the deaths have been condemned by the international Committee for the Protection of Journalists and the local journalists’ union. The committee said Romario sometimes wrote about official corruption.

So-called “militias” that carry out extortion and killings operate in the area.
