Stampeders kick off regular season with Grey Cup rematch

CALGARY – The third time was the charm for the Calgary Stampeders.

After coming up short in the previous two Grey Cup appearances, the Stampeders would emerge victorious with a 27-16 win over the Ottawa Redblacks last year in Edmonton.

It’s a Grey Cup rematch as Calgary opens the 2019 regular season at home against the Redblacks Saturday night.

Both teams look a lot different now though than the ones that met at Commonwealth Stadium last November.

While the Stamps were able to keep the league’s premier quarterback in Bo Levi Mitchell for an eighth season, gone are receivers DaVaris Daniels, Lemar Durant, Bakari Grant, Chris Matthews and Marken Michel along with defensive tackle Micah Johnson and linebacker Alex Singleton.

The Redblacks have seen both starting quarterback Trevor Harris and receiver Greg Ellingson leave for the Eskimos as well as running back William Powell off to Saskatchewan.

Sportsnet 960 The FAN’s Logan Gordan says Mitchell returning is a big deal for Stamps’ fans and while he for sure generated some NFL interest, the team upped their offer to keep him and that will keep the red and white competitive.

Logan says tonight’s game is huge because of all the changes and you want to start the season on the right foot.

He adds, while the season is long it’s always important to get a big win and start the season the same way they ended last season.

The 2019 Grey Cup will be held in Calgary.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.
