Retiring Cochrane pharmacist brings community together to quit smoking

A pharmacist is spending one of his last shifts before retirement getting his small town to quit smoking for a day. Local government is recognizing June 15 as “Cochrane Quits Smoking Day” and the hope is other Canadian cities mark the occasion, too.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A retiring Cochrane pharmacist is hoping to leave one last positive health impact on the community.

He co-hosted an event called “Cochrane Quits” that encourages people to quit smoking cigarettes, even if it’s just for one day.

Kelly Kimmett has owned and operated TWO Pharmacy for 30 years, he says his big inspiration for the day was his dad.

“I had another motivation, my dad died from lung cancer at the age of 67 in 1991. He did quit smoking many years before and became a very militant non-smoker, but in the end it still claimed his life,” said Kelly Kimmett.

He adds there is power in numbers and bringing smokers and non-smokers together will help those trying to kick the bad habit.

“The changes happen almost immediately within minutes there are improvements, within days there are all kinds of improvements and within 10 to 15 years you have just a good of chance of living as long a life of a non-smoker,” Kimmett said.

Cochrane town council declared June 15, 2019 “Cochrane Quits Smoking Day”.
