Premiers of Alberta and New Brunswick share some aligning views

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Premier Jason Kenney says Alberta and New Brunswick are partners in prosperity.

He made this statement after a recent meeting with New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs in Fredericton and Saint John.

“He has been a true champion of the big vision of a west to east coast oil pipeline, Energy East it was called before the federal government killed it and Premier Higgs has been trying to get that back on the map,” said Kenney.

The Premiers also share aligning views when it comes to defending taxpayers from the federal carbon tax.

Alberta recently repealed the tax and Higgs said their province has also joined the court challenge.

“We have a plan to work on the mission so we’re not back away from that, but we don’t need to tax people more money to make it happen,” explained Higgs.

Kenney agreed saying they don’t want to punish people for heating their homes or driving to work.

Meantime, Kenney thanked Higgs for co-signing a letter along with five other premiers.

“To call on the federal government not to proceed with the bill that will further undermine investor confidence and basically make it impossible to get a pipeline built like energy east in the future,” said Kenney, speaking about Bill C-69.

Another controversial bill the two discussed was Bill C-48,  the west coast tanker ban.

“If the federal government can stop us from exporting Canadian energy off the west coast, then they could just as well step in here into the east coast,” said Kenney.

Higgs said that as a province they have been exporting oil with large tankers for up to 60 years and it’s been a very successful operation.

“And we’re saying we want to use our own crude oil, we want to use crude oil from Alberta while we’re using crude oil in our country. We have the largest refinery here in Canada and we want to maximize our own resources so that’s the goal.”
