Second trial begins for Alberta couple in son’s meningitis death

A new trial is underway for an Alberta couple who used homemade remedies instead of seeking medical attention for their son who died of bacterial meningitis but some in the health care profession worry this is just another opportunity for Collette and David Stephan to spread dangerous misinformation.

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – A friend of an Alberta woman has testified that she advised her to get a medical opinion the day before the woman’s 19-month-old son stopped breathing and later died in hospital.

Terrie Shaw was the first witness called in the trial of David and Collet Stephan.

It’s the second trial for the parents, who were first convicted in 2016 of failing to provide the necessaries of life for their son Ezekiel.

The Supreme Court overturned the convictions last year and ordered a new trial.

Shaw, who is a midwife, told court that Collet Stephan asked her to examine the sleeping toddler in March 2012.

Shaw said she wasn’t alarmed, but told Stephan that her son could have a condition such as meningitis.
