Hot and dry conditions have crews preparing for more wildfires in northwest B.C.

NORTH B.C. (NEWS 1130) — As Alberta continues to deal with wildfire evacuations and smokey skies, B.C. is getting ready for wildfires here.

B.C. Wildfire Service says it is preparing for more potential wildfires in the Northwest region of the province because of hot and dry weather, high-to-extreme fire danger ratings and drought levels at an all-time high.

Kyla Fraser says the weather is a bit of a concern in some areas over the next few days.

“With the lightning you know it’s very hard to predict more than a few days in advance,” she adds. “And it can be just a few days of lightning that generate something that we are fighting for the entire summer.”

Currently, there are 41 wildfires burning across B.C., most of them caused by lightning.

Fraser says crews are also working on putting out several smouldering spots on the Alkali Lake fire that began last August,

“So these fires can smoulder underground over the winter and then if conditions become warmer and dryer such as we see in the spring then they can re-emerge and pop up again,” she adds.

The situation is a lot worse in Alberta right now. Thousands have been forced from their homes because of the Chuckegg fire near High Level as thick smoke drifts around parts of the province.
