Closure for some city-owned Calgary golf courses a possibility in new report planned for council

CALGARY (660 NEWS) -The City of Calgary may have to consider closing down some public golf courses.

That’s the point of a report coming before councilors on Monday detailing the finances of the eight city-owned courses.

The plan is to make sure the courses stop losing money.

Ward One Coun. Ward Sutherland says there may be some surprises in this report as they explore the real estate potential of these courses.

“It’s about the profitability,” Sutherland said.

“And if there’s some parts of the golf course we should sell off to maybe development or other purposes. Just to make sure that we don’t constantly lose money, because right now, unfortunately, the golf courses as a whole lose money.”

Now Sutherland says they are not planning to shutter all of the courses, but they want to move to a net-neutral position in the next three years. Meaning all the courses at least break even

They may also consider innovative ideas for the courses

“And a lot of golf courses are actually changing, you do nine holes, seven holes golfing, etc., because of time. So, we have to be more creative,” Sutherland added.

Another report will be completed in the following few weeks, further detailing how to get courses to that net neutral position.
