Three dead in plane crash near Smithers

SMITHERS (NEWS 1130) — The B.C. Coroners Service is confirming three fatalities in an airplane crash near Smithers.

The victims include one pilot and two passengers. The fourth person was airlifted to hospital.

Four people were on the plane when it went down yesterday morning, according to the Transportation Safety Board.

The Transportation Safety Board confirmed that four people were on board the small plane.

The Cessna 182 sent out a transmission from its emergency locator Saturday morning, prompting a search by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

When the site was found, a rescue technician was lowered by cable from a helicopter to check for survivors and the operation was turned over to police.

Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Sophie Wistaff says a team of investigators is at the site and will be gathering information and evidence looking into what may have caused the crash.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre said it received a transmission from the plane’s emergency locator Saturday morning, prompting a search about 100 kilometres northeast of Smithers.
