Suspect dead after pedestrian crash in the NE

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Police have provided an update following a hit and run incident in the northeast Wednesday morning.

Police say the driver of the vehicle and the victim knew each other, and police believe this was a targeted attack.

Police also say the suspect was known to them.

At around 3:30 am, police were called to the intersection of McKnight Blvd and 52nd St. after reports that a vehicle allegedly tried to intentionally hit a man in the intersection.

Police arrived on scene and provided first-aid to the 40-year-old man victim who suffered serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the suspect driver fled the scene and was found in medical distress on 32nd Ave and 68th St.

Police attempted to arrest the suspect, and when the man refused to exit the vehicle, he was tased by police.

That suspect later died in hospital.

“At this time we believe the victim and the driver were known to each other, the nature of that relationship currently forms part of the ASIRT investigation,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Ayliffe.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the case as per standard procedure.

The Calgary Police Service says the cause of death is unknown at this time.
