How much snow will fall? Different forecasts paint different pictures for Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – If you look at the forecasts around the city you will see some completely different stories for the weekend.

Some weather networks say there will only be light snow in Calgary, but one online site is predicting as much as 15 centimetres for the city.

660 NEWS Meteorologist Andrew Schultz explains why there can be such a difference between forecasts.

“They (meteorologists) put into account different things like the jet stream, upper air patterns, temperatures, patterns, stats. Generally, what they think is very important and maybe slide the importance of an upper air temperature, look at precipitation patterns, wind and that jet stream and try to point out what’s going to happen in the city of Calgary.”

Schultz expects there will be some light snow over the weekend but not a major snowfall.

“One of the things I do as a meteorologist is I look at the different models out there because these are teams of meteorologists who’ve programmed their systems and their computers to generate forecasts based on what they really believe in. One can look at probably, 10 to 15 of these different models.”
