EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – A group of Alberta students are standing up to the newly elected UCP government by planning a province-wide school walkout.
“The reason that we are protesting is because of a policy that Jason Kenney’s UCP has promised,” says Aimee, an organizer for Alberta School Walkout 2019
The walkout is being organized to voice displeasure over possible changes to an Alberta law aimed at protecting students in Gay-Straight Alliances.
The group posted on Instagram Wednesday night encouraging students to walkout of school between 9:30 and 9:50 a.m. on May 3.

Alberta School Walkout. May 3rd, 9:30 to 9:50am to protest the policies of the UCP on the protection of LGBTQ students, 50% diplomas or anything else you are upset about with the new government, but that you didn’t have a say for in the elections. Us students need a voice. Share this post and use the hashtag #albertaschoolwalkout to let help us have a voice.
Changes to Bill 24 were proposed by Premier-designate Jason Kenney early in the election campaign. Under these proposed rules, teachers would have the right in some cases to disclose to parents if their child has joined a Gay-Straight Alliance.
Those changes sparked outrage from many in the community who rallied in support of students in GSAs.
Aimee said the well being of those in these clubs needs to be front and centre.
“The reality is that it’s not safe for their parents to know if they’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community.”
The protest is meant to be a peaceful demonstration to support the rights of LGBTQ youth across the province.
