Major fire in northwest Red Deer

RED DEER (660 NEWS) – Black plumes of smoke could be seen from the Q.E.2 as fire crews battled an industrial fire in northwest Red Deer Wednesday.

It was ignited around 10 a.m. and it took a few hours before it was considered under control.

Tyler Pelke with the Red Deer Fire Department said no one was injured, but the department did take some precautions.

“The manufacturing facility actually sits adjacent to a residential community and so as a precaution there was some local evacuations done, about 80 houses were done,” said Pelke.

Despite the size of the fire, the department did get some breaks when trying to extinguish the flames.

“If anything today, the smoke direction worked in our favour, we were able to get our vehicles and our apparatus and our personnel in fairly quickly and very closely to be able to battle the fire.”

Crews will remain on scene for much of the day Wednesday to monitor and put out any hot spots.
