Mayor Nenshi lashes out against Quebec government

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Mayor Naheed Nenshi is sounding off against proposed legislation in Quebec.

Bill 21 would ban all public officials from wearing any religious symbols.

Quebec Premier Francois Legault called the proposition a moderate position to take, yet there have been outcries about this being an attack on Muslims.

Nenshi said Calgary would accept anyone who feels the Quebec government is trying to stifle their beliefs.

“Come to Calgary. You are welcome here. And to use someone else’s line ‘here we don’t care about what’s on your head, we care what is in your head.'”

Nenshi hopes the message will be felt by Quebec politicians who are planning on imposing the rules.

“In 2019 to have a provincial government that says ‘hey there are certain jobs you cannot do simply because of your faith.’ This is unacceptable.”
