Injunction request filed in ‘Kamikaze’ UCP Leadership campaign investigation

An injunction request has been filed to shut down the investigation by the Office of the Election Commissioner into irregular contributions to Jeff Callaway’s leadership campaign during the United Conservative Party’s leadership contest.

Jeff Callaway and five other people are seeking an emergency court order to postpone the investigation until after the election.

A Court of Queen’s Bench judge in Calgary is set to hear arguments in the case on Monday.

The NDP has issued a statement saying UCP leader Jason Kenney should instruct the people involved in the injunction to cooperate with the investigation.

“This is a completely unacceptable attempt to interfere in the work of the Election Commissioner in order to hush up facts Mr. Kenney doesn’t want the people of Alberta to know,” said NDP candidate Sarah Hoffman.

An Elections Alberta investigation has levied $15,000 in fines against Callaway’s former communications director Cam Davies and has found that five people contributed money that wasn’t their own.

Allegations have surfaced that the sole purpose of Callaway’s campaign was to undermine Kenney’s main opponent, Brian Jean, in the leadership race.
