Home-based tattoo shop shut down; AHS recommends patient testing

EDMONTON – (CityNews) Alberta Health Services has shut down a home-based tattoo operation and recommends anyone who received a tattoo to test for further viruses.

AHS said anyone who received art at ‘Hornets Nest Tattoo’ at #106, 10140 156 St. or from the operator, William (Liam) Davis to be tested for viruses that could spread through unsanitary tattoo procedures.

“To prevent the spread of infection from one person to another, equipment used in tattooing must be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized according to health standards,” Dr. Shobhit Maruti, Medical Officer of Health for the Edmonton Zone of AHS said in a news release.

“This particular home-based tattoo operation did not have these proper sterilization or sanitation processes in place, meaning individuals who received tattoos through this operation may have been exposed to viruses including Hepatitis B and C, and HIV.”

Anyone who may have received a tattoo should call their doctor to arrange confidential testing. It will determine whether or not the person has been infected.

People are also encouraged to call 811 if they have concerns.

The closure has been in effect since Feb. 19, 2019 and will remain shut down until all violations have been addressed.

Davis will not be able to provide tattooing services while the order is in place.

For more information on whether an operation has passed inspection, people can call Edmonton Zone Environmental Public Health at 780-735-1800, or can visit the Alberta Health Services website.
