Canada sees largest influx of immigrants since 1950s: Statistics Canada

CANADA (NEWS 1130) – Last year marked the largest influx of immigrants Canada has since the first World War, according to Statistics Canada.
Statistics Canada says the increase in population continues to be driven by international migration.
“With the addition of the fourth quarter data, population estimates for 2018 are now complete,” read the release. “Canada grew by 528,421 in 2018, of which 80.5% was due to international migration.”
“This level of increase has not been seen since the 1950s.”
Statistics Canada says the number of people immigrating to this country between Oct. 1 last year and Jan. 1, hit more than 70,000.
“Rapid population growth is not typical for a fourth quarter,” read a release from Statistics Canada. “In fact, this is when population growth is generally slowest because of seasonal patterns associated with births and the arrival of immigrants and non-permanent residents.”
Alberta and Nunavut saw the fastest population growth during that time at 0.4 per cent.
