NYC: Met Museum admission fees generates $2.8 million

New York City officials $2.8 million received as a result of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new admissions policy will go toward 175 cultural organizations city-wide.

Cultural affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl says the agreement with the Met is stabilizing one of New York’s “major institutions” while also boosting other cultural and arts organizations. The New York Times reports the Met was allowed to change its pay-what-you-wish policy of 48 years in 2018 to now require visitors from outside New York state to pay $25.

The policy change was approved by the city, which owns the museum’s building, and the museum agreed to turn over 30 per cent of its increased admissions revenue in return.

Among the institutions to benefit are El Museo del Barrio and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
