Israeli foreign minister urges votes against UN report

JERUSALEM — Israel’s foreign minister is urging his counterparts in the U.N. Human Rights Council to vote against the panel’s demand that Israel examine and change its tactics against Palestinian demonstrators along the Gaza border.
Israel Katz sent a letter to 26 foreign ministers Tuesday calling the U.N. commission “biased and distorted.” He said its recent report criticizing Israeli military shootings neglects violence perpetrated by Gaza’s Hamas rulers and violates Israel’s right to self-defence.
The report released last month accused the Israeli army of committing potential crimes against humanity in killing over 189 Palestinians during mass protests last year at the Israel-Gaza border.
The document was denounced by the Israeli government and prompted an outcry from pro-Israel groups that have slammed what they call the council’s anti-Israel bias.
