Hockey Calgary votes to merge three organizations

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A northwest Calgary minor hockey association has lost its fight to remain autonomous.

Hockey Calgary will be merging the Northwest Warriors with two other groups: the Bow River and Crowfoot Associations.

Parent and coach Colin Andrews is upset at this move and calls it a ‘hostile takeover’.

“Everybody that is in our organization is absolutely floored that this decision is even happening and the speed at which it is happening. It was only Thursday that my son played his last hockey game of the season and by Saturday, we find out that there’s a vote that will potentially happen to disband our organization.”

According to Hockey Calgary, all three organizations have faced declining enrolment over the past few years.

The Warriors strongly fought the move, arguing that Hockey Calgary was only trying to grab its ice time.

Andrews says he only found out about the vote two days ago and feels blindsided by the lack of transparency.

“The most troubling part about this vote is that it’s actually happening. As a head coach, I only learned about it yesterday (Saturday) that there was going to be a vote on whether or not our association would continue to exist.”

The associations held a rally on Monday evening and presented a 1,500 name petition arguing against the move.
