Calgary Police Commission appoints new chief constable

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Calgary Police Commission has named its new chief.

The Commission appointed Mark Neufeld as Calgary’s new Chief Constable on Monday following ratification of the appointment by Calgary City Council.

Councillor Jyoti Gondek had high praise for Neufeld.

“His experience in two major metropolitan centers combined with his continuing education is absolutely what we need right now. This is a forward thinking individual, he has incredible ability to make decisions based on information and is just very good at what he does.”

The new chief will fill the position following the retirement of former Chief Constable Roger Chaffin after 32 years of service.

Neufeld spent 24 years with the Edmonton Police Service before moving to Camrose to serve as Chief. He is currently President of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police and Chair of the Alberta Law Enforcement Team (ALERT) provincial board of directors.

The commission sees Neufeld as a “people first” leader and a man with an exceptional history on the police force who knows how to work in all areas of the field.

He is expected to begin the position no later than June.
