Legacy garden planned to remember the five people killed at a Brentwood house party

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It was a tragedy that left a scar on our city, but a legacy garden hopes to mend some of the wounds left over from the Brentwood stabbings nearly five years ago.

Lawrence Hong, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Jordan Segura, and Zackariah Rathwell were all killed at an end of year party on April 15th, 2014.

The project will be called the Quinterra Legacy Garden.

The garden will be the city’s first fully dedicated music garden and intimate performance space and will be constructed in South Glenmore Park.

It will include elements representing the five people lost, reflecting each of their personalities through inclusivity and the arts.

“The Quinterra Legacy Garden is full of unity and love. It cultivates community in an area that embodies a positive, energetic spirit,” Barclay Hunter said. “It is our way of thanking Calgarians for their incredible support during the last five years and for reminding us that there is light beyond tragedy and loss.”

The garden will have ongoing programming and will be a local spot for things like drum circles, yoga and reading groups.

Interactive music instruments will be placed throughout the garden.

“Our hope is that the garden will be a vibrant and intimate gathering place for public performances or quiet contemplation. People will leave the garden with a clear mind,” said Shannon Miller of the Quinterra Legacy Garden Group. “This isn’t just a typical garden. We’re going to have unique programming, performances and interactive activities for the public to enjoy.”

There is a fundraising goal of $750,000 for the garden. To donate click here.

“We hope it will be a space to build community, emulate love, spread positivity and inspire reflection,” said Ronda-Lee Rathwell. “Our vision is to see Calgarians in the garden with their family and friends, enjoying the arts or a meditation program and being thankful for today.”
