N.E. Calgary soccer pitch getting significant upgrade

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary soccer players will soon have an improved pitch to hone their skills.

The Genesis Centre in the northeast will see new artificial turf installed along with new lighting, scoreboards, walking paths, portable bleachers and leisure areas.

Nearly 10,000 players use the current natural outdoor field, which has proven to be challenging to maintain, given Calgary’s sometimes unpredictable weather.

“We believe it will grow and develop soccer, strengthen the community and increase sports access and opportunities for youth and community members,” explained Susan Cress, executive director of the Calgary Minor Soccer Association.

The upgrade will cost nearly $6 million. The City of Calgary has committed $2 million, while the North East Centre of Community Society is contributing roughly $2 million. The Government of Alberta will pay for the rest.

The scheduled completion date is 2020.
