RCMP credits mandatory alcohol screening after several suspensions in Airdrie

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) – A handful of charges and license suspensions have been handed out in Airdrie for impaired driving.

The stats come from the RCMP who provided an update Wednesday on how many charges and suspensions have been given since the mandatory alcohol screening test came into effect.

“From December 18, 2018 to February 28 of 2019, three alcohol suspensions for AZAT which is the Alberta Zero Alcohol and Drug Tolerance for GDL drivers.”, said Cst. Tracy Hare

The penalties for those GDL drivers is a 30-day licence suspension along with a 7-day vehicle seizure.

RCMP also issued 12 IRS (Immediate Roadside Sanctions) suspensions which resulted in a 72-hour license suspension and vehicle seizure.

“Even though point zero eight (.08) is the legal limit for criminal charges, they (RCMP) recognize that drivers who are having a blood alcohol of point zero five to point zero eight are still affected. Their driving is still affected to the point where they shouldn’t be driving. The fact that these many people have been driving with that blood alcohol level is still concerning.”

Cst. Hare said that the drivers who were suspended ranged in age from 20 – 62 with the average age being around 34 years old.
