CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Less snow accumulation this winter in Calgary could be good news for motorists in our city.
“So when the snow on the road melts it gets underneath the roadway and then when it freezes, you know, it can form these ice pockets that you know as cars drive over them when that melts, it forms potholes,” said Chris McGeachy a spokesperson with roads, who says they are expecting to see fewer potholes this year.

McGeachy says as of January 2019 they’ve had 143 service requests for potholes, which is down about five or six from last year, although we don’t have any February numbers yet. Typically he says more of these requests will be made as the weather warms up to above zero.
“We typically do try to do our pothole work during dry and warmer conditions,” he said. “That’s to make sure that the repairs that we do are, you know, done properly and it’s a permanent fix.”
He adds, during the winter crews can make temporary fixes to potholes, so feel free to call 3-1-1. However, he says they will be waiting until the road temperatures reach +5 degrees, or more on a regular basis before making pothole repairs.
