Calgary kid aces school project after Calgary Transit returns lost family heirlooms

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It was a happy reunion outside St. Stephen School in the city’s southwest as Calgary Transit was able to return priceless family heirlooms to a young student.

Thirteen-year-old Mieszko Albert was using the heirlooms for a school project and was horrified to learn he had left a bag of his great-grandmother’s treasured belongings behind on a city bus.

Tears were shed, and a panicked phone call by his mother to the transit authority was made in the hope that someone spotted the items that were over 80 years old. Her call reached driver Amin Manji who pulled over and found the bag one on of his seats on his bus.

“I was quite touched that I could save this and he could get it back,” Manji said. Often people leave possessions on his bus, but it’s unusual something like this happens, and they are able to track down the rightful owner.

“Inside of it contains my antiques and collectables; they’re pretty important to my family. There are two spoons in there made of pure silver from my great-grandma,” Albert said, he was worried he might never get them back, so when he got the news it had been found he said, “I felt relief, and didn’t feel like crying anymore.”

“I also have memorabilia from my grandparents and great grandparents as well so I kinda understood the sentimental reasonings and stuff so when the customer service representative called over looking for these objects, I sent out a message to the three school buses that were driving at that time and hoped that one of them would come back with a yes response that they had the bag,” controller Barb Demytryshyn.

After all of that drama, Albert aced his school project achieving an impressive mark of 91 per cent.
