More burst pipes lead to advisory from Calgary Fire Department

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Many Calgary residents woke up to a chill in the air and some water around their vehicles and houses on Tuesday night.

The Calgary Fire Department responded to two calls of burst pipes that turned some streets into rivers.

The first occurred around 8 p.m. on Namaka Crescent in the north-west, that sent some water flowing onto John Laurie Blvd.

The second incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on 22 Ave and 43 St south-east.

Spokesperson with the Calgary Fire Department, Carol Henke said when they responded to that call, they weren’t able to immediately shut off the water.

“Water services was called to the scene and crews also went to tell all the homeowners in that immediate area to monitor their properties for any water in the basement and to move their vehicles out of the pooling water because that freezes and then traps the vehicles.”

Henke says that crews have responded to several burst pipe calls this winter and it’s likely there will be more.

“We have seen a lot of frozen pipe calls, water main breaks, water line breaks, so we respond to all of those and try to mitigate the risk to the public and also assist people.”

The City of Calgary’s water services has tips for residents regarding frozen pipes including advice for prevention.
