Warmer than average spring predicted for Alberta

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Weather experts are predicting an abrupt transition into spring across Alberta, it will just take a few weeks to get here.

Forecasters with the Weather Network said winter weather will continue to hang around for most of the next three weeks, followed by a sudden change to mild temperatures.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” said meteorologist Doug Gilham. “We do expect the cold pattern to persist through early March.”

A similar transition is expected across the rest of Canada, with British Columbia the first province to get a taste of spring.

“The good news is that after we endure just a couple more weeks of cold the rest of the spring looks better,” said Gilham.

Warmer weather would be welcome news to Calgarians who have shivered through a colder than average February.

“The temperature has not been above freezing since Jan. 31, in Calgary,” said Gilham. “Just a historic month, one that many will be eager to forget.”

Once spring arrives, it doesn’t mean winter is completely finished with Alberta. Gilham expects to see occasional wild swings of winter weather through late March and early April.
