CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The moves have already started to happen, but some of the biggest Stanley Cup contenders still haven’t made their play. It’s the NHL Trade Deadline, when rumours swirl, teams position themselves for a post-season run, or set up for a strong draft with hopes of better seasons ahead.
Peter Klein with Sportsnet 960 the Fan noted Mark Stone as the big name the Calgary Flames could be chasing, but the cost would be high.
“Right now it sounds like it’s going to be a couple of first round picks plus a prospect you really like and a player you probably really, really like. So it’s going to be a steep price and that’s only to get him here for a couple of months.”
Klein acknowledges there has been some doubt throughout the year from Flames fans if this team is for real or not, but he argues this roster is legitimate and could make a run.
He argues that a move for Stone would be a confirmation that this team is a cup contender.
“That is a chips in the middle, let’s go for this thing type of move. If the Flames do anything today, that is all-in you are going for it. Even if they don’t, this is a team that can already make some noise the playoffs.”
He wouldn’t be surprised if the team tries to pick up a depth defenseman as well, but doesn’t believe the market is strong enough to look for a backup goaltender.
