Trans-Canada reopens following highway havoc Wednesday

CANMORE (660 NEWS) – The Trans-Canada Highway has reopened near Dead Man’s Flats after an advisory was issued on Wednesday night to avoid the area.

Emergency crews responded to several incidents, as a result of slippery and icy conditions.

At one point, dozens of cars were in the ditch and EMS were on scene tending to the stranded drivers and passengers. Eight people total were taken to the nearest hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Three of the injured are children.

“I’ve been told there’s 30 or 40 vehicles in the ditch or involved in separate collisions at this time. I believe there’s at least one collision and most of the vehicles have gone in the ditch on their own, but some are blocking the roadway as well,” said Sergeant Stan Andronyk with Canmore RCMP during the peak of the problems on the highway.

Darlene called 660 NEWS and said she had stranded there while officials deal with the pileup.

“There are buses and semis ahead of us and behind us and it’s snowing very hard. There’s no movement going east or west,” she said adding that the line of traffic is as far as she can see. “It’s a very dangerous situation for anyone who’s not patient. We don’t know what the roads will be like once we start moving either.”
