Calgary Hockey team needs views to win 100K for local charity

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Springbank Rockies peewee hockey team is in the top 10 for Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup and is hoping to finish in the top three when the semi-finals close on Saturday.

This would get them one step closer to winning $100,000, which would go to the Nathan O’Brien Children’s Foundation.

“The Chevrolet Good Deeds cup is for peewee teams to get out in the community and do something good for the community,” Chase, one of the Rockies players, said. “We started by putting bags on doors in the community and asking people to fill them with food, and a couple days later we collected the food.”

Five thousand houses later the Rockies surpassed their original goal of collecting 40 feet of food, and they ended up collecting 53 feet, which was packed into a semi-trailer.

The team also collected close to $5000 in cash donations. All the teams’ hard work was caught on video and uploaded to YouTube.

“It was a great feeling to be able to achieve and then beat our original goal,” Nathan, another Rockies player told 660 NEWS.

Viewing for the semi-finals of the Good Deeds Cup closes Saturday night, and the Rockies are looking to Calgarians and the rest of the province for help, as they were the only Alberta team to make it to the semi-finals.

The team is asking for people to watch their video on YouTube as every view is the equivalent of a vote. As of Thursday afternoon, the video had been viewed over 31 thousand times.

As for the experience itself, head coach Kevin Heise said it’s been incredible to watch how the team and the community came together on this initiative and gave back.

“As a dad and a coach, it has been an extremely rewarding experience to watch these guys buy in, and for this to grow.”

The players reiterating what their coach said, adding that it has been a once in a lifetime experience.

“I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what happens on the ice,” Rockies player Lukah said. “What matters is what you do off the ice and how you help people because helping people is magical.”

The Rockies have received support from the Calgary Flames, Hitmen and Roughnecks in this final push as the Saturday night deadline approaches.
