Nenshi: ‘We’ve got to get pipelines built’ after safety concerns around rail transportation of dangerous goods

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi was asked during a University of Calgary announcement Wednesday if he was concerned about the increased crude rail shipments through the city.

“Though I often say that I wish that municipalities had more regulatory control over that industry, I think everyone would agree that this is a necessary short-term thing to do, but the ultimate answer for energy access is the safer answer, and the smarter answer which is, we’ve got to get pipelines built.”

According to Nenshi, they are working with their rail partners to ensure everyone remains safe. Nenshi admits, that although there is a CP line running through the downtown core, he’s committed to ensuring “everyone is safe all the time” and offered some assurance “certainly we’ve had very good safety operations from our railway partners.”

The city is no stranger to derailments, during the 2013 food, there was an emergency where they had to anchor rail cars filled with a petroleum liquid from falling off the sinking Bonnybrook Bridge.
