Cold weather causing several bus cancellations near Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It is a good day to spend some time indoors.

The temperature is going to be stuck below minus 20 Tuesday and Wednesday.

If you ever wondered how hardy Calgarians can be, you should check out the hashtag frostbike on Twitter.

Some cyclists decided it was a good time to bike around the city.

Darrell Smith with Environment Canada reminded us it could be worse.

“Edmonton International (Airport) did hit minus 40 as did Fort McMurray and Peace River. Further south, Springbank Airport did get down into the mid-minus 30s last night (Monday).”

He expects things to warm up to the west of us starting Wednesday.

Our Meteorologist Andrew Shultz said even when things warm up, it won’t necessarily be warm.

“This arctic vortex is stubborn and it is big. We do see some breaks in it and it will start to pull off. We are certainly not going to be above the zero mark for the foreseeable future.”

Though it will dip again for the weekend it doesn’t appear that we will near minus 30 again.

All buses in Chinook’s Edge School Division and the Providence Children’s Centre are not running.

There will be no buses running on Tuesday in Rocky View County except in Chestermere. Those Rocky View schools are also closed.

The Calgary Board of Education says buses will be operating in the city.

You can check the First Student and Southland websites to see if your kid’s routes are as scheduled.
