Union calls for more officers to monitor Calgary’s safe consumption site

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Calgary Police Association wants more officers on the ground to respond to an uptick in crime around Calgary’s safe consumption site.

President Les Kaminski told 660 NEWS when you have a “crime issue”, it’s common sense to redirect those resources to deal with that issue.

Kaminski didn’t sound too worried over the Chief’s fears that more officers could scare people away from the Sheldon Chumir Centre.

“We don’t need to send people into Inglewood with million dollar houses. You go into the areas where there is a disadvantage, drug issues, and violence. That’s where we need to concentrate our efforts.”

After hearing recent comments from politicians, he said this shouldn’t fall squarely onto the shoulders of police officers in district one and that it’s incumbent on other partners and social agencies to step up to help them address the issues.
