Brace yourself – Arctic weather headed our way

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – You can forgive Calgarians if they have been lulled into a false sense of winter.

After a relatively mild few months, southern Alberta is bracing for a polar vortex gripping other parts of Canada and the United States.

Environment Canada is forecasting daytime highs of -20 on Sunday and Monday.

“It looks like we’ve got a shift in the weather pattern,” said meteorologist Justin Patten. “Cold air is moving southward from the Arctic which should bring pretty cold temperatures down into most of Alberta, including Calgary.”

The blast of wintry cold may seem like a shock to the system.

It has been more than a year since Calgary experienced temperatures that cold. The last time the daytime high was colder than -20 was Jan. 11, 2018 (-23.)

Fortunately, the cold snap will not last long. Temperatures are expected to return near normal later that week.
