UCP candidate walks back alarm on $50K carbon tax for her church

EDMONTON – A candidate for Alberta’s United Conservatives is walking back the alarm she sounded over the weekend about the carbon tax.

Michaela Glasgo tweeted on the weekend that her church in Medicine Hat is facing a carbon tax bill this year in the range of 50-thousand-dollars.

Glasgo was mocked and abused on Twitter for the comment and told to produce the evidence.

She now says after checking with the Hillcrest Missionary Church that the number is actually about one-tenth that number, at five thousand dollars.

Church pastor Steve Pahl says the 50-thousand refers to total costs facing the church, adding that many in the congregation support action on environmental issues.

Glasgo says it was an honest mistake.

But a spokesman for Environment Minister Shannon Phillips says too often the UCP repeat false information in order to stir up anger among voters.

UCP Leader Jason Kenney has said the carbon tax only hurts families while doing nothing to reduce greenhouse gases.

He says if his party wins the spring election, the first act of his government will be to dismantle the tax.
