Hepatitis A warning in Nanton

NANTON (660 NEWS) — Alberta Health Services is warning about exposure to hepatitis A in Nanton.

It says an individual was confirmed to be infectious with the illness while preparing foods in the town earlier this month.

As a result, AHS warns anyone who consumed food at the Auditorium Hotel on January 11 and 18 may have been exposed to hepatitis A, along with people who ate bannock prepared by JT Foster School’s outdoor club on January 17.

For those who ate food from the hotel, they should call Health Link at 811 for assessment of exposure date and risk, and will be given information regarding planned immunization clinics.

Individuals who ate the food prepared by JT Foster School are being contacted directly and immunization clinics are being prepared.

If you are exposed to hepatitis A, it can take 15 to 50 days to experience symptoms and a vaccine remains effective within two weeks of exposure.

Symptoms include tiredness, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. There will also be yellowing of the eyes and skin several days later.

Young children may be infected and not experience symptoms, however, they are still infectious to others.

AHS believes the risk is low, but since hepatitis A is a serious infection they are advising utmost caution.
