The Big Winter Classic happening in Calgary this weekend

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s never too cold for some live music and a popular festival is returning Thursday in clubs around downtown Calgary.

Billed as a way to increase the exposure of local musicians, Big Winter Classic runs through Sunday.

Director Adrian Urlacher said there are thousands of events during our short spring and summer, but they felt a need to establish something in the colder months.

“Year one we did 378 tickets, last year we did 1700 attendees, so three short years we’ve grown quite a bit and we expect much the same this year.”

There are over a hundred bands during the festival with the majority of them from Calgary and surrounding areas while some headliners are coming from around Canada or the U.S.

The locations are also unique with indoor and outdoor stages at Broken City and Last Best.

“I always think creating a product that happens once a year it’s always great to try and re-imagine spaces, give people something different.”

Inner City Brewing, The Palomino and the refurbished King Eddy will also host.

Urlacher noted there’s a multitude of genres and encouraged people to find something new.
